Advances in electronics allow devices to get smaller. This has also created innovation in implantable medical electronics. Today's heart pacemakers (and other devices) are smaller and less intrusive. One of the hurdles that still limits the sizes of medical devices is the plug-in connector for the wire harness.
Indium Corporation continues to invest in ways to help companies get over this obstacle. Our answer? High aspect ratio 99.99Au solder washers. The old rule of thumb, when punching solder preform washers, is an aspect ratio of 1:1. This means that the thickness can’t exceed the wall thickness, and vice versa. Today, we manufacture thicker washers with thin walls. The new rule is as aspect ratio of 1.5:1 to 2:1, and, on occasion, a 3:1 ratio.
Indium Corporation's high aspect ratio solder preforms allow engineers to bring the connectors closer together, with the same solder volume in each joint, all in a smaller overall, less intrusive, finished product.
