First Project and Lunch-n-Learn

  • Hello Everyone,

My second week at Indium Corporation is now complete and I continue to feel as if I am doing more learning than working! Everything I have been doing is extremely interesting, and I always have something to be working on or somewhere new to go and experience.  I have to say, this is the first job that I’ve had in which I am not watching the clock; waiting and counting down the hours until my day is over.

Last week our group of interns attended the first lunch-n-learn program and it exceeded my expectations. What sounded like a pretty average presentation about networking, turned out to be an interactive learning session that made two hours fly by.  The strategy for holding a conversation will absolutely be helpful for me in my career, as well as my personal life. This process allowed us to have a visual formulation of things to talk about when in a one-on-one conversation with someone, in order to avoid blank, awkward spaces. During the Lunch-n-Learn, we also learned how to create a more positive and enjoyable work environment in ways that included listening to others and showing a genuine interest in what they are telling you, to something as simple as smiling more often. I would like to thank Diana Wolgemuth with Dale Carnegie Training for a fun and constructive presentation.

Last week I was also given my first project by my supervisor, Tim Jensen, which involved analyzing sales data in order to discover anything that stands out and could need a more in-depth look. On top of learning more about Microsoft Excel, I was required to present my findings to the Engineered Solder Materials team.  The idea of this was nerve wracking to me at first, because I didn’t know the team very well yet, and this was my first time doing data analysis like this. Despite my nerves, I felt very comfortable during the presentation due to the very kind and helpful nature of everyone on the team, and I received excellent feedback after I had finished.

When I first heard that we had to write short blog posts about our time here at Indium Corporation, I was worried that it would be difficult to find things to write about every week. I am now doing so many interesting things that I find I need to pick and choose what I can put in my blog in order to keep it from getting too long!  This has been another great week of this internship and I can’t thank everyone who has helped me enough.

    Sincerely,

    Graham Harrington
