Indium Corporation Hosts High School Students for National Manufacturing Day

October 17, 2013

Indium Corporation hosted 45 students and teachers from Herkimer BOCES on October 8 as part of their celebration of National Manufacturing Day. Students toured Indium Corporation’s state-of-the-art advanced manufacturing facility in the Utica Business Park. The tour exposed students to the skills required to take advantage of career opportunities in advanced manufacturing in the Mohawk Valley.

The tour emphasized five key components of a high-performance manufacturing organization:

  1. The skills, aptitudes, and abilities of a diverse workforce
  2. The importance of accurately addressing customers’ needs
  3. The transformation of raw materials to finished goods
  4. The role of advanced manufacturing in the global market
  5. How processes optimize efficiencies, effectiveness, customer satisfaction, and profits

Students observed manufacturing processes and cleanrooms. They also enjoyed a hands-on technology experience involving Indium Corporation’s patented nanotechnology material, NanoFoil®.

Indium Corporation will continue promoting manufacturing and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education and career opportunities through its classroom speakers’ bureau. Through Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES and Herkimer BOCES, Indium Corporation will provide classroom speakers to area schools. Speakers will talk to students about the importance of a STEM education for careers in advanced manufacturing. Each speaker will focus on the various skill sets that are needed to support a manufacturing facility, and the importance of each to the success of the company and the student. Career discussions will focus on engineering/technology, human resources, marketing/communications, accounting, information technology, and safety/environmental.

National Manufacturing Day is designed to expand a community’s knowledge about, and enhance peoples’ awareness of, manufacturing careers and their value to the local, regional, and national economy.
