Indium Corporation, CONMED Corporation, Utica National Insurance Group, and Assured Information Security (AIS) joined together to co-sponsor the first annual "Utica Starts with U" intern networking event.
Interns from all four companies were invited to attend the event that was held Tuesday at the thINCubator, which encourages the training and retention of talented young professionals in the greater Utica area.
"As Utica's Technology Company®, our internship program is designed to identify and develop talented college students for a future in rewarding careers in the STEM field," said Jim McCoy, Talent Acquisition Supervisor. "Our goal with this program—and partnerships with like-minded companies such as CONMED Corporation, Utica National, and AIS—is to create a pipeline of skilled professionals who want to work and live in, and enjoy, our community."
Event attendees participated in panel discussions on topics including current young professionals' lifestyles in the Utica area, as well as how to contribute and invest in the greater Utica area.
"College is a crucial time to explore and discover career opportunities and preferences not only in a particular industry or field, but also in terms of lifestyle and geographic location," said Julie Hall, University Relations Lead at CONMED. "We are grateful to the many community members who spoke to the interns and provided insight and advice on life after college in the Greater Utica Area. We hope that participation in the event will increase the interns' interest in returning to Utica after college to start professional careers, and encourage college students to consider CONMED Corporation in their post-graduation job search."
"Utica and the surrounding area offers tremendous opportunities to young people," said Ryan Gifford, Utica National's Director of Talent Solutions. "Whether it's jobs, housing, schools, the cost of living or something else to attract them, we encourage those just beginning their professional careers to consider staying in – or coming back to – our area. Plus, Utica National's program for interns emphasizes the wide variety of jobs available at an insurance company – from human resources, IT, and risk management, to marketing, underwriting, claims and many others."
"At AIS, we value our interns tremendously and we are dedicated to offering them opportunities to grow every day," said Kandis Harter, AIS Talent Acquisition Specialist. "Seeing our interns network with other motivated individuals was rewarding, because the event not only instilled enthusiasm for their summer internships, but it also made our interns excited about living and working in Central New York in the future."
