From Class to Career: Why I Chose Indium Corporation

As a mechanical engineering major and mathematics minor at SUNY Polytechnic Institute, certain company names naturally become familiar over time. One of the most prominent is Indium Corporation. From my first semester on campus, I noticed how often Indium Corporation came up—in classroom discussions, career fairs, hallway conversations, and even on periodic tables featuring the company logo. It quickly became clear that Indium Corporation wasn’t just another local employer: it was a respected and influential presence in the engineering community.

By the time internship season rolled around, Indium Corporation was already at the top of my list.

Throughout college, I’ve pushed myself in and out of the classroom. I’ve worked as a math tutor, teaching assistant, and resident adviser. These roles taught me how to communicate complex topics clearly, lead and support others, and manage my time effectively. As I approached my senior year, I knew I wanted more than just leadership experience. I wanted an opportunity to grow as an engineer in a real-world setting.

That opportunity came last summer when I interned at Atlas Copco as an applications engineer. It was my first formal experience in an engineering environment, where I gained valuable skills in product research and customer-driven problem solving. However, the program was very small, and I found myself craving more structure, connection, and professional development.

That’s when I began hearing stories from classmates who had interned at Indium Corporation. They spoke highly of the hands-on projects, the mentorship they received, and the ways their internships helped shape their career paths. Some even returned after graduation as full-time employees. Their experiences made it clear that Indium Corporation’s intern program wasn’t just about checking a box—it was about investing in students.

As I did more research, what stood out was how intentional the company was about creating a meaningful internship experience. Weekly lunch-and-learns, professional development workshops, networking events, and intern-specific programming showed that Indium Corporation values learning and community. I was drawn to the idea of being part of a group of interns exploring their career paths together, while being treated as contributors, not just visitors.

That impression was confirmed during the interview process. From my first conversation, it was clear the team genuinely cared about my goals, interests, and what I hoped to gain. One unexpected highlight was learning that Indium Corporation offers an internship focused specifically on sustainability. That kind of opportunity is rare, and it showed me that the company isn’t just talking about environmental responsibility. They’re building it into their future, even at the intern level.

Accepting the offer was an easy decision. Now that I’m here, I can confidently say that Indium Corporation has exceeded my expectations.

From day one, I’ve been trusted with projects that challenge me to think critically, collaborate, and apply my academic knowledge. I’ve been encouraged to ask questions, learn from mistakes, and explore different parts of the company. What’s made the biggest difference is the support I’ve received from my supervisor. He has gone out of his way to make this internship meaningful by walking me through production processes, setting up conversations with engineers across departments, and checking in regularly to make sure I’m getting the most out of the experience.

Even beyond my department, the culture at Indium Corporation is incredibly welcoming. No matter what someone’s title, people are eager to share their knowledge and help others grow. That openness has been motivating and energizing. It makes me want to keep showing up, learning, and contributing every day.

This experience has also helped me solidify my career goals. Before this internship, I wasn’t entirely sure which area of engineering I wanted to focus on. But after working on projects tied to sustainability and materials development, I’ve found new interests I hadn’t considered before. That kind of insight is exactly what I was hoping to gain. Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful I chose Indium Corporation for my internship. It wasn’t just their presence on campus that impressed me: it was the stories from past interns, the structure of the program, and the culture of support and purpose that made all the difference. For any student looking for an internship that offers real experience, mentorship, and room to grow, Indium Corporation is a place that truly delivers.
