Not Your Average Internship

  • Some people believe you have to leave a part of yourself at home before you go to work. Why should you have to change or limit yourself just because of a job?

Well, there are certain things you don’t transfer from your personal life to the workplace, which goes without saying. Although, humor is something that can help all of us get along with people, and get things done.

From weekly HR meetings, seeing others interact in the hall, the general feel/culture of Indium Corporation has a hint of humor to it. Without humor, the workplace would have no shades of gray, just plain Jane. Who would want to work at a place like that? Not me, that’s for sure. Over the past 8 weeks I have grown more comfortable around my peers and have begun joking around with employees from time to time. For the record, at the start I didn’t know any of the interns in the program at Indium Corporation. Now, we converse and laugh like we’ve all known each other for years. Things are much better that way. We enjoy the company of each other, therefore we enjoy our work more every day.

Here is a very informal conversation I had with Bryan, one of the other interns in the program. It’s obvious that we get along and know how to have a good time at work while also getting things done.

    Dave:

Hey guys! Everyone please give me a preferred t-shirt size.

    Bryan:

What kind of shirts are we talking? Cotton, polyester, these things matter, Dave.

    Dave:

I'm guessing 100% cotton. Perhaps Gilden brand? For you Bryan, I would recommend a medium or maybe even a large. Your decision really depends on fit preference. Take some time, think on it, and let me know when you're ready.

    Bryan:

Agreed, that was great response! I’ll take a large though! Mediums are risky with the full cotton; that shrinkage is too unreliable!

    Dave:

I feel that you've made a great decision Bryan; it was great working with you. Looking forward to doing business in the future.

    Bryan:

Thank you, it has been a pleasure working with you, too, Dave. Who's your manager, I want to put in a good word with him.

But on a different but equally serious note, why haven’t we already gotten shirts? And, why don’t we have a full line of shirts? People around here have sweatshirts, t-shirts, polos, button downs. Why haven’t we gotten all new wardrobe yet?

    Dave:

Very good suggestion, Bryan, I will have to speak with upper management about the Indium wardrobe. In addition to your suggestion, maybe we could add bath robes to the list? There's nothing like slipping into a nice robe after taking a tub or even a shower for that matter.

    Bryan:

You've already earned a gold star, but you deserve a second one for that suggestion Dave! Bravo!!
