Products Compounds Germanium Oxide

Germanium Oxide

Germanium oxide has a diverse range of applications across various industries. It offers the unique properties of germanium and is often traded alongside germanium metal, as it can frequently be used in its oxide form without conversion back to the metal.

We offer standard and fine product varieties that differ via their particle size distribution. Metallic impurities are kept typically below 1 ppm for each metallic impurity element –see Product Data Sheet for details.

Optical Properties

Germanium oxide has a high refractive index: in the visible spectrum n~1.6. In fiber optics, germanium oxide is used as a dopant in the core of the fused silica, since germanium has very low absorption, and germanium oxide, like silica, forms a glass. In glass manufacturing, germanium oxide is used to form specialty glass for precision optical instruments.

Alloy Production

Germanium oxide is used in specialty alloys as a precursor or intermediate for germanium. The most notable germanium materials formed are germanium-silicon alloys for semiconductors with enhanced electrical conductivity and thermal stability, and germanium-aluminum alloys for aerospace and advanced engineering components that need high corrosion resistance and strength.

Catalysis

Germanium oxide acts as a catalyst in polymerization reactions (PET–polymers for plastic bottles and fibers), oxidation reactions (production of aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and oxidation of hydrocarbons in petrochemicals), and hydrogenation catalysis (where it improves the activity of primary catalysts like palladium or platinum).
