In Situ Dissolvable Metal Alloys

In the world of specialty solder alloys, most of us want metal that will stand the test of time. We want to create solder joints that last longer than the components they attach, we want thermal interface materials that do not void over time, and we want hermetic seals that do not leak after years of surface. Even though most of what we do revolves around applications that require medium to long-term reliability, applications that need metal to rapidly break down are incredibly interesting as well.

Here is an application for metal that can rapidly break down. The degradation of the assembly is discussed around the 2:35 timestamp.

I believe this can be a tool in your design toolbox as well – for other applications. Dissolving metals could be used to your advantage in special circumstances. Our knowledge of metallic interaction comes from decades of experience working with gallium and gallium-indium alloys.
