CLINTON, N.Y., September 3, 2026 — Indium Corporation has promoted Hongwen Zhang, Ph.D., to Research and Development (R&D) Director. In this role, he will lead technology development, product road-mapping, and the continued advancement of the company’s materials portfolio. Reporting directly to President and CEO Ross Berntson, Zhang joins the management team and will drive alignment between R&D and customer needs while accelerating innovation across the business.
Zhang most recently served as Senior R&D Manager, Alloy Group, following roles as Manager and Principal Metallurgist. Since joining Indium Corporation in 2008 as a Research Metallurgist, he has played a key role in advancing high-temperature, lead-free solder materials and strengthening the company’s metallurgical expertise. He is co-inventor of Indium Corporation’s Durafuse® technology, led development of the BiAgX® alloy family—the first non-gold-based high-temperature lead-free solders—and has contributed to numerous customer collaborations and technical partnerships.
Zhang holds a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University, along with a master’s in materials science and engineering from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has published two book chapters and more than 50 conference or journal papers, and he has been granted more than 10 U.S. and international patents. He is a recipient of the 2023 SMTA Members of Technical Distinction Award, a two-time Indium Corporation Silver Quill Award recipient, and is Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certified.
